Urgent trauma hotline

Facial fracture. Displaced mandible. Acute TMJ lockjaw.

Dr. Wakefield answers directly — same-day slots are reserved every morning for trauma and acute TMJ cases referred from community dentists and emergency rooms across the Bay Area. If you have a patient who cannot open, cannot close, or has visible facial asymmetry, do not wait for a fax confirmation.

Direct line (415) 555-0182
  • Mandibular fractures — pre-op workup and OR scheduling same day when medically stable.
  • Midface and orbital fractures — coordinated with ophthalmology on call.
  • TMJ closed lock — arthrocentesis and lavage slots reserved before noon.
  • Failed implants with active infection — extraction and bone preservation planning.

Before the first fax

Questions our referring offices ask before sending the referral.

If your question isn't below, the front desk can reach the surgical coordinator directly at [email protected].

How do we transfer CBCT and intraoral scans?

Use our secure DICOM upload portal — credentials are printed on page two of the Imaging Protocol PDF. For offices without DICOM capability, we accept physical media (USB) by courier or mailed optical disc. Sirona, Carestream, i-CAT, and Planmeca exports are all documented step-by-step in the protocol.

What is your insurance pre-authorization turnaround?

Twenty-four business hours for all major medical and dental carriers. Our coordinator verifies benefits, obtains authorization where required, and sends you a written benefits summary before the patient is contacted for scheduling.

What does the post-operative report include?

Every referring office receives a dictated operative note, an imaging summary when CBCT was taken in-house, and a list of post-op instructions given to the patient. Reports are delivered within five business days of the procedure by secure portal or fax, your choice.

We're referring a patient with a failing implant placed elsewhere. What should we send?

The original placement records if available, most recent periapical or CBCT showing the failure, and a one-line clinical narrative on symptoms. We've handled over four hundred revision cases; the consultation focuses on salvage versus replacement, and we send our recommendation back to your office before scheduling any surgery.
